Enrollment at the two public schools is below last year’s level and considerably below’ the level of 1,040 used in putting together the current school budget. The enrollment as of Tuesday was 986, 377 at the high school and 609 at the elementary school.
School Superintendent David Gangel told the School Board he estimates that the Average Daily Membership through March, which is used in computing state aid will be 993. The difference in state aid between 1,040 anticipated and 993 will be $72,000, he said.
Dr. Gangel said he will set $72,000 aside and not spend it. “We will try to set monies aside that will not affect the classroom,” he said. He added that he feels this can be done without endangering the budget.
Later the School Board voted to spend nearly $10,700 that was not in the budget to make a part-time teaching position full time. Richard Smith, who has been working as an administrative assistant part time and as a teacher part time, will work as an administrative assistant full time. Emily Wingate, who is working part time with Mr. Smith’s sixthgrade students wiH teach full time.
