The plane, headed from Dulles to St. Louis, was near Gainesville when it reported the on-board fire and was given instructions to make an emergency landing at a private airstrip owned by Paul Mellon at Rokeby Farm in Upperville.
But the flight ended six miles short of Rokeby, crashing at the edge of a field owned by Virginia Beef Company along Route 710, about 100 yards north of the Southern Railroad crossing and a populated neighborhood near Marshall.
Dickson, the pilot, had rented the plane from Air Spirit Aviation in St. Louis when his own aircraft developed engine trouble and needed repairs en route to Dulles. Dickson was returning to St. Louis to pick up his own plane when the crash occured.
