community for the new groups.
The groups, which began meeting in July, are receiving a favorable response from the community at large, Ms. Wolfford said.
Although women’s issues are no different than men’s issues, Ms. Wolfford said, women tend to come forward sooner, sensing there is a problem. Men, however, hold onto their pain for a longer period of time making therapy, when it’s sought, more difficult.
According to Ms. Wolfford, women need to stop valuing themselves according to the amount of success they have in their roles. She said that society teaches women to be in tune with others to such an extent that many women see themselves in a distorted way, based mainly on how others see them.
“Women are socialized to be caretakers and nurturers and assess their self-worth based on how well they perform those roles and when there is conflict or disruption in those roles they look inside themselves for blame,” she said.
She said that many women are simply what others make them because, for one reason or another, they are not able to pull everything about themselves together to form one self.
