“It’s not that they haven’t had goals or desires —they’ve put them on hold while they fulfilled their earetaking needs. When relationships begin to fall apart they become depressed,” Ms. Wolfford said.
She said that men are able to hurt and grieve over a failed relationship and' then go on with their lives. Because women define themselves according to their relationships and roles, they have more difficulty in separating failure of a relationship from failure within themselves, Ms. Wolfford said.
Along the same lines, women who are abused many times feel that the abuse is their fault. Many w'omen unconsciously go along with the notion that if bad things happen to you then you must be a bad person because, "again, they are defined by outside happenings, Ms. Wolfford said.
Problems in establishing one’s self lead to difficulties with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, shame, failure and inadequacy, Ms. Wolfford said.
