The Park Service contracts with the California-based Institute for Bird Population for its monitoring system. Birds are captured, banded, and released in a continentwide network of monitoring stations. There are six stations in the park covering 55 miles of mountain range. For each of the past several years, nearly 1,500 birds have been caught and recorded. Atkinson stressed that “the more we learn about these birds, the more likely we are to head off problems. Without them, we will have the phenomenon called Silent Spring and lose a crucial part of insect control.”
