cheaper, Atkins said. Things picked up pretty fast, and rodeo fans • started showing up for the Circle 7’s weekly rodeo on U.S. Highway 211 East, where Brookside Restaurant stands today. Friends donated some money to help buy trophies and outfits, and finally the show grew big enough that one of the cowboys, Sam‘‘Sporty” Griffith, suggested the troupe take their act to the fair. It didn’t hurt the Circle 7 that Sporty was also a member of the Fair Association. “The fair association wanted us to take an active part in the fair,” Griffith said. “We built portable bleachers and fences and had one show a year down there.” The fair shows, which involved bull riding, • goat roping, bronco riding, barrel racing and other western games, were a huge success, according to Griffith.
