Writing the book was much like his work as a journalist. He was familiar with researching documents and piecing together a lot of information into big stories.
“What’s different about it is that in newspaper work most of the time, you’re interviewing people, getting very current information. This was just the opposite. Everyone is dead. All the information has to be documentary, and it’s from another era so you have to look at it in the context of that era not the context of your era. It’s just a different world. You have to place yourself in that world, so I sort-of retreated into the 1860s for about three years in order to think in that time frame. I really enjoyed it. I got to like the 1860s, although it was a terrible decade in many ways.”
