But more than the tractor pulls, wrecked cars, carnival rides and entertainers, people come to the fair to meet one another. “Lots of people look forward to it each year because it’s a big social event,” Judd explains. “I’ve helped mow grass, sell tickets, sell concessions — but the thing I enjoy most is meeting people. There are people there that I don’t see at any other time from one year to the next.” Griffith agrees the fair is a social draw. “People come to the fair from Luray, Stanley, Shenandoah, Sperryville, Shenandoah County and all over,” he says. “It’s the ‘get-togetherness’ that means a lot to people around here.” Shirley adds, “A lot of folks look at it as a Homecoming, where they get to see people they haven’t seen since last year. And it’s a family-type atmosphere. It’s a clean fair and we’ve kept it a good wholesome place for families over the years.”‘Vf’
