He was having an especially difficult time finding information about the three colonels who commanded the regiment and were all killed in battle. After countless futile attempts he went to the University of Michigan where a large collection of Civil War papers had been acquired from a collector. There he came across a scrapbook from the family of Col. Isaac Gurdon Seymour, first commander of the Sixth Louisiana. In it was a clipping from a New Orleans newspaper written about 10 years after the Civil War. It was an account of the three colonels’ bravery that ended with: “Will the state of Louisiana let the days pass, and her dead heroes be forgotten, and the names and deeds left out of the history of the times that tried men’s souls? Let us hope that the historian will appear in time.”
