By Mary Beth Martin Rappahannock News Staff Writer
Local author and retired journalist and editor James Gannon didn’t plan on spending three years writing “Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers,” a history of the Sixth Louisiana Regiment in the Civil War. When he and his wife Joan moved to Rappahannock in 1994, he planned to write a historical novel about his great grandfather Patrick Cavanaugh and his brother Dennis. Instead he wrote a remarkable chronicle of a regiment composed mainly of first and second-generation Irish immigrants who fought for the Confederacy with fierceness, courage and fortitude.
