Why did they go to New Orleans? Why did Dennis become a confederate soldier? Why did he stay fighting the war?
He discovered that cotton Ships returning from Liverpool, England, gave cheap passage to New Orleans and that led to a population of about 25,000 Irish immigrants there in 1860. While researching for his novel, he discovered that virtually nothing had been written about the Confederate Irish, although much was written about the Irish Brigade of the North where the Irish population was much larger.
