Choosing the perfect animal to show at the fair is not an exact science. “You want to pick the animal that has the best features,” Renee said. “You want to look for an animal with good structure and one that has more things the judges are looking for.” After endless hours of preparation, the youths are ready to show off their prize animals in one of two categories, “showmanship and market,” which is limited to only 4-H and FFA members, and “commercial,” which is open to anyone.
