It takes a gamble, Gochenour said of booking an act. Her job is to find an affordable performer capable of creating excitement and providing a night of fun and music for fair attendees. Gochenour keeps an eye on certain performers beginning in early summer, contacts a number of potentials in September or October, and usually wraps up negotiations in January. The trick, she said, is to hire an affordable talent, popular at the time she begins negotiations, and capable of attracting a crowd one year later. Like all fair organizers and participants, Gochenour is not paid for her work. She is one of many volunteers proud of and devoted to the fair they spend all year improving and organizing. She does, of course, enjoy contributing to the fair, as do all who work to put it together. Indeed, if volunteers didn’t gain some gratification from their countless sacrificed hours, the Page Valley would have no fair at all.
