Atkinson suggested that at least some of the mountain lion sightings might be of former pets that had been released or escaped. “There is a breeder in Goochland County,” he said. “You can buy one if you want one.” He also said that the dark stripe down a bobcat’s back sometimes gives the illusion of a long tail, leading people to believe they have spotted a mountain lion.
The cameras have been in place and operating since November 1997. The wildlife biologists have added visual and scent lures to their photographic arsenal, hoping to finally attract a big cat. The program will continue at least into the coming fall.
