That “handful of farmers” grew rapidly to include business and industrial leaders, community leaders, church clubs and others who wanted to be a part of the new fair. “The farmers wanted to show off their crops and livestock, the ladies wanted to show off their preserves and the 4-H kids wanted to show off their animals,” Griffith recalls. The interest in the new fair and its concept was so great, in fact, that the Page News and Courier billed it as “just about the biggest event held in this section in a decade or more,” and reported that more than 10,000 people turned out for the two-day event. “It was the first joint enterprise of its kind between farmers of the county, industries and business men,” the article went on to say.
