Over the next three years, the fair kept expanding, as the number of entries increased, and as fairgoers made suggestions about special events and shows they wanted to see- A pony show that started in 1954 as a side event for children, for instance, had become a regular horse and pony show by 1957. And the fair board kept adding an extra day to the activities, so that by 1960, it began on a Monday and continued through Saturday.
“We had figured, after all the time it took to put it on, that we should just go ahead and run it six days, and we kept stretching it out,” Shirley says.
