opponents of at least the early bill was an affordable housing advocate — an African-American serving on the board of supervisors of a central Virginia county who said he didn’t want anybody to get the idea that the general answer to rural housing needs was the mobile home. Many questions were raised about the suitability of mobile homes as housing, and as far as I know they all remain valid. For example, if mobile homes are so great as houses, why 1) do we tax them like cars, 2) does the buyer have to sign a liability disclaimer signifying knowledge that they bum fast and produce toxic gasses in the process, 3) do Florida and the Midwest call them “tornado bait”? The answer to the first question is that mobile homes do not meet national housing standards, and depreciate in value over time; answer the others yourself.
