The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors approved two resolutions and three budget items at its August meeting. They also discussed office space for county agencies.
The board unanimously approved a resolution instructing County Administrator John McCarthy to request that Governor Gilmore designate the county a drought disaster area.
According to the Rappahannock County Food and Agriculture Council, which consists of the Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service and Virginia Cooperative Extension, over 65,000 acres of farmland have been adversely affected by the severe drought and heat this year at an estimated loss of 2.5 million dollars. Most of the land affected is pasture, but hay, com and apples have also been affected.
A resolution to support the placement of a commemorative bust of George Washington in the town of Washington was also approved unanimously.
The bust was proposed by 31st District Delegate Jay Katzen, in recognition of 1999 being the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s passing and the fact that the town of Washington is the first town in the country to bear his name. As far as McCarthy knows, there will be no cost to the town or county. The bust is reportedly being donated by Mount Vernon.
