This month, the county Board of Supervisors
viewed plans for the new public convenience
site, which will replace the soon to close public dump sites at Huntly and Scrabble, for the first time.
The plus side to this new site is that the county will be better able to monitor and combat illegal dumping and scavenging, as there will be one central location for dumping. And as the containers will probably be emptied three-to-four times a week, scenes like the one pictured below at the Scrabble dumps may become less common.
On the other hand, there is the issue of convenience. The new center may be convenient for people in Washington and Sperryville, and people in Amissville have the landfill nearby. But what about people in Flint Hill, Chester Gap, Woodville, Scrabble and Castleton? Those people will have to go out of there way to dispose of their trash.
There are some who feel that this change will lead to more littering along the county’s roadways, which is already a problem. Assigning people in community service programs to roadside cleanup duty will help, but it’s not likely to stop the problem completely.
Whether you support or oppose the new site, it seenis to tie going forward. One good point was made at this month’s supervisors meeting: we need some creative thinking about encouraging people not to litter. And it may take some really creative thinking now that people will soon have fewer places to take their trash.
