spoken with Bob Moore, VDOT Resident Engineer, about contract mowing along the county’s highways. Moore was not aware that those who mowed did not also pick up trash on the roadside. After speaking with the contract workers, there has been a noticeable improvement in this area. Moore also says that there is some additional money that hasn’t been used, which could possibly be put to use in the county.
Kiser had also spoken with Moore and County Attorney Peter Luke about putting people in community service programs to work on trash pick-up duty. Moore has agreed to provide training, orange vests for the workers and road signs. The Sheriff’s Office has also offered to help. Luke plans to present a summary of the plan to the judge. Kiser says that the only thing missing is a vehicle to transport people to and from the work site.
Kiser added that the work of Trash-Free Rappahannock hasn’t cost the county any money. He hopes that they can continue to work without any cost to the county. And he urged everyone to engage in “creative thinking” about ways to encourage people not to litter.
