Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman designated, on Monday, the entire state of West Virginia and 33 Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania counties as heat and drought disaster areas. Virginia counties include Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Bland, Buchanan, Clarke, Craig, Frederick, Giles, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Tazewell.
Action by the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors, also on Monday, resulted in the unanimous agreement on a drought relief resolution that will be forwarded to the Commonwealth, and that will begin the process of disaster declaration by the Federal government.
The Rappahannock resolution noted that 65,500 acres of farmland has been affected in the county, and that pasture, hay, com and apple losses are estimated at $2.5 million.
Should Rappahannock County be declared a disaster area by the Department of Agriculture, area farmers will be eligible for lost-cost emergency loans, and participation in other programs including the Emergency Conservation Program, which provides emergency cost-share funding for water conservation measures; federal crop insurance; and the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program,
