A nest box was labeled Jane Austen, her novels delight John and Lee TVott. Another was titled Lewis Carroll at the request of Shaffer, who is a scholar of the works of the author of Alice In Wonderland. Other nest boxes were designated by the names of Henry Fielding, Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte.

The two nest boxes designated as Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll were placed at either end of the semi-circle of hollies at the front of the library building. “That was a mistake on my part”, said John Trott. “I didn’t take into consideration the extreme aggressiveness of mockingbirds.” The holly shrubs define the year-round territory of a pair of very territorial mockingbirds.

The male of the pair is an incomparable singer that declares the hollies his through a torrent of brilliant song that includes remarkable mimicry of other birds. The mockingbirds have attacked and driven away any bluebird that investigated the Austen and Carroll boxes. “The Jane Austen box is now a favorite singing perch of the male mockingbird.” said Shaffer. “He seems to think the box was placed there for him,” added Trott.
