or the larger, well-known predator^ - hawks, owls and snakes - the work to capture a hummingbird is probably not worth the effort. Too much effort for too little reward.

Vagaries in the weather, such as cold spells in spring after the birds have arrived in their nesting territories, take a toll on the hummingbird population, as do violent wind storms that toss the eggs from nests.

Still, enough of these tiny birds survive to fill our days with wonder as we watch their darting flight and brilliant flashes of color.
