used what was called “night soil” to fertilize the crops and land. Night soil was taken straight out of a person’s outhouse. This is a rich fertilizer that was prized. In modern times, however, human waste flows to interconnected sewage systems that carry it into wastewater treatment plajnts. .
Sewage sludge is the byproduct of the wastewater treatment process.
Municipal waste is piped in to a treatment plant — in this region to Blue Plains in Washington, DC and Arlington/Alexandria facilities— and put through a process to purify the water.
What is sludge? Harper-Collins Dictionary of Environmental Science describes sludge as: “A viscous, semisolid mixture of bacteria and virus-laden organic matter, toxic metals, synthetic organic chemicals, and settled solids removed from domestic and industrial waste water at sewage treatment plants.”
