There are hazardous industrial wastes including cyanide, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and other volatile and semi-volatile organic chemicals.
Sewage sludge is known to contain nonylphenols, surfactants, phthalates and other hormone disrupting chemicals Which cause great harm not only to humans but also to wildlife and aquatic life.
All of the aforementioned do not magically disappear in the Wastewater treatment process. In the treatment process, it is the water, not the sludge, that is purified. I The sludge does not suddenly7 become pure “night soil” through this process.
Although the Washington DC area has relatively little Heavy industry, this wastewater .comes from the entire sewage system, not just residential areas. ' The EPA acknowledges Class B sewage sludge contains human pathogens, slaughterhouse wastes, mortuary discharges and infectious hospital 4Xid. institutional wastes, including disease-causing bacteria, viruses, virulent antibiotic‘resistant microbes, protozoa, intestinal parasites and ova of parasitic worms. Federal Law permits every business and industry in the United States to dump 33 pounds of hazardous wastes into public sewers every mpnth with no reporting requirements.
Disposing of sludge has always been a challenge. It used to be pumped straight into the oceans. But the Clean Water Act of 1972 made it illegal to dump this pollutant into the oceans. There remain several options for disposal: Among them are landfilling, incineration, and land application, which is the least expensive method.
