I phoned my mother for the umpteenth time today and when she heard my voice, she immediately exclaimed, “I have to call you back; I have something very important to tell you!” as she clicked over from her first caller. Everyone has call waiting now; even my seventy-five year old mother.
I said that we, my husband and I, had just had dinner, and that were calling on the car phone, so she could call us back in about 10 minutes when we get home. I looked at my husband and repeated what Mother had said; he merely raised his eyebrows ever so slightly and shrugged his shoulders. ~ - About 20 minutes later, Mother called. There was such excitement in her voice she could barely make complete sentences. She immediately began to tell me what she had been doing that day and how very overjoyed she was with the wonderful “treasures” she had found while digging through her mother’s, Mary Helen Wills Carter’s, old personal papers.
Mother was just now getting around to going through the papers after clearing out grandmother’s house in . Washington, D.C., almost two ' years ago. She was so excited • to have found bits and pieces of her family history and other interesting documents in those old papers. Among them a copy of a gubernatorial proclamation dated May 26, 1917 by then Virginia governor Henry C. Stuart concerning the military draft.
