They mate in monogamous pairs and like to nest in forked branches up to 30 feet high, usually near water. Females often return to the same site. The female will build a small bowl-shaped, tightly woven nest. The females also line their nests with the down of thistle and cattail fluff. She usually lays four to six bluish-white eggs, which hatch in 12 to 16 days.
The hatchlings are born without feathers and with their eyes closed.
