1972 states sewage sludge is a “pollutant”.
There are two main types of sludge produced today. Class A is heated to a temperature that kills the pathogens, parasites and worms in it.
This is usually bagged and marketed as in Milorganite. Class B is “composted”, but not treated to kill all the living organisms. Both are considered “exceptional quality” for use on farmland. Class B is the type of sludge that is given away to farmers. Both contain more than just human waste, as there is no way to separate the metals, chemicals and other toxins from them.
So what is in it?
EPA acknowledges all sewage sludge, both Class A and Class B, contains toxic metals including arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, molybdenum and mercury, and dangerous pesticide. There are toxic bioaccumulative poisons including dioxins and brominated flame retardants.
