While the original plan was to play two seveninning games, light drizzle and cold winds forced them to settle for one ten-inning scrimmage. Several Rappahannock parents drove to Pennsylvania to see the game and to provide hot chocolate to help keep the girls warm.
“I was very pleased about how our girls handled the weather and the triple A competition. We out-scored our opponents 11-6, earning the respect of the Carlisle team with the quality of our pitching and our play,” said Mr. Smythe.
JV coach, Richie Burke said, “This was such a good experience for all involved. Our girls really bonded with the girls from other team.”
Then they all gathered on the mound and gave the Pennsylvania school a commemorative softball figurine that was inscribed with the words “Friends in Softball 2001, Carlisle Pa. & Rappahannock County VA High Schools”.
The girls all hugged goodbye and wished each other good luck, exchanging addresses and e-mails with their new “kindred spirits” and headed back to Virginia at 3 p.m.
Asked if the weekend turned out like he planned, Mr. Smythe responded, “It exceeded my expectations as far as providing the means to bring together our own group of girls from four different grades together as one team.
I think the girls got to see, experience, and feel the universality of being an athlete. Although they did not know the Carlisle girls, there was a common and almost instant bond because they were athletes.”
Coach Boddie echoed the same sediments. “The most profound thing about the weekend was that we all learned that trying new things and meeting new people can be a rewarding experience for students and adults alike.” The enthusiasm generated throughout the weekend will no doubt give the girls something to look forward to for next year.
