TFR efforts appreciated
One of the sure signs of early spring is the sudden appearance,
along roadsides in Rappahannock County, of large orange plastic bags stuffed with roadside trash. As you drive along a road thus decorated, it almost appears as if there’s been some magical overnight eruption of huge orange fungi.
But this is no weird natural phenomenon. Those bags are the work-product of a project of which this county can be proud. Trash Free Rappahannock is a citizen-inspired and citizen-supported program that helps keep our county’s roadsides clean and neat. TFR’s “road gangs” pick up all those bottles, cans, wrappers, rusty mufflers, old tires and other bits of debris that fill hundreds of orange bags every spring.
The program, which uses court-ordered offenders assigned to community service, is supervised by volunteer citizens, who transport the crews to work sites and oversee their work. It is financed by private contributions. It is an excellent example of a caring community finding a creative solution to a public problem.
This is a program deserving support of all local organizations and private citizens. The Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection supports TFR, and has just donated $400 to the effort. We hope many local citizens and groups will do whatever they can do to support TFR. We salute all the people responsible for making this program a success, and a model for public-private co-operation.
