Whistlecups awarded: Paula Parlegreco of Castleton and Peter Exton of Amissville were victors in the annual Labor Day tennis tournament and received their prize whistlecups from James J. Kilpatrick on whose court the Monday finals were held. Runners-up were Diane Bruce of Washington and Tom Palmer of Nokesville. Matches were played Saturday and Sunday on several county courts with the finals Monday followed by a picnic lunch.
A trooper’s best friend: Max is all business when he’s on the job with his partner, Virginia State Trooper C.A. Moore. But in off duty hours, the German Shepherd enjoys the same hobbies as his counterparts in civilian life - romping in the woods and retrieving tennis balls from farm ponds.
In a photo, enjoying the fruit of the vine is Mbrgan Hay of Washington who samples grapes from a Clinton vine at the home of William Stuart in the town. The vines are about 80 years old and were planted by Mr. Stuart’s father who was a merchant (Washington Cash Store) in addition to his agricultural ventures. The aged vines are trained on supports and pruned carefully so they bear well in spite of their many years.
