On boggy land which once stoofl natural grasses proud and green, that suam and waved with purpose and were held in high esteem. Fragmites seed took hold and boldly claimed the station same, and overtook the sacred place, and grew unchecked with fame. So acres grew of this uninvited, stately genus mean, it's rustling spike of waving arms that wildly claimed “I'm queen ". and proudly took it's place amongst the seashore’s special grace, and grew thickly as a promise so no other took it’s place. The river breeze plays happily within the fragmites leaves it has no thoughts of prejudice as it heaves a path it cleaves, while the feathers in fragmites caps bow and wave politely it knows not of it’s future promise is thought to be unsightly. I've loved the gentle rustle of the fragmites symphony played out among the breezes, and ignored their infamy, I've seen the haven they provide for many critters wanderings, and sat and loved their presence, and felt their worth while pondering. I've seen glowing yellow eyes peering out amongst the fronds, while in a tiny boat at night, rowing in low tide’s ponds, • and heard the magic of the night and cries of herons and loons - all sharing on the river, midnight’s full and silvered moon, i i A gentle lap ofixirs and water and the swishing of the hull, mingle with Nature's concert without a moments lull, in the deep, high walls of fragmites, that enclose the black of night. the moon rays cast a shadow, from the heron taking flight. I'll love the lowly fragmites although I know their history for they harbor such a part of my romantic river’s mystery. Cynthia Stamps Woodville
