• Mrs. Helen Williams, assistant superintendent and former RCHS Math teacher extraordinaire, will be retiring at the end of this month. She has touched the lives of so many folks in her years in the RCPS. As Transportation Director she had many “interesting” experiences checking roadways in the wee hours of Rappahannock’s snowy mornings! If you cross paths in the next few weeks, be sure to wish her well. We will all miss her very much.
• We are very pleased to have so many talented and enthusiastic new teachers in our system this year. The energy they are bringing to our students is a joy to see. They are a part of our community and we should all be grateful for their commitment to our children. Please take time to say hello and make them feel welcome the next time you are in one of our schools.
• The RCES Book Fair dates have already been set. Please mark your calendars for Oct. 1626. The Book Fairs in the spring and fall each year are the major fundraiser for our Library and a wonderful opportunity for our students and parents to buy an assortment of wonderful reading material. Volunteers are desperately needed every afternoon from 1-3 p.m. to help the youngest children with their selections. If you are able to help, even for one day, please call Mrs. Aney Massie, Librarian, or Jan Makela, at 987-8259.
• A new book will soon be available for check-out in the RCES Library. The book, See the Stars: Your First Guide to the Night Sky by Ken Croswell, was donated by Highlights for Children. During the 1999/2000 school year the student publication asked teachers nationwide to provide assistance before the book went to press. The organization needed teachers to find students who would read the book and provide input as to whether or not the book appealed to their age group by interest or readability. RCES teacher Mrs. Linda Welk responded and asked second grade student Gary White to read and give his input. His remarks were then forwarded to Highlights.
