Dr. Smith’s obituary read as follows:
Dr. William Smith, aged 70 years, one of Rappahannock County’s most beloved citizens, died May 1 and was buried, Monday afternoon in the Sperryville cemetery.
Funeral services were conducted from the Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Mr. Rhodes of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church, Madison, assisted by Rev. Harris Chef, Rev. Abernathy, and Elder A. Lewis Hudson.
Coming to Sperryville from Madison County, 47 years ago, Dr. Smith began the practice of medicine there and continued his work until a few days before his death. The impressive funeral service, the throng that crowded the church and the yard and the beautiful flowers, furnished only a slight indication of the esteem in which this beloved physician and friend was held.
Besides his widow who was Mrs. Frances Wood, of this county, Dr. Smith is survived by one brother, James Smith; a sister, Mrs. Walter Crigler, both of Madison County; two children, James and Mrs. Rhodes Brown, both of Sperryville and four grandchildren.
Dr. Snead was the only doctor in the county from 1950 until 1962. His son, Dr. John R Snead IV joined him and stayed until 1967. After Dr. John P. Snead Jr. retired in 1971, a Dr. George Berberian opened an office in Dr. Sneads’ former house and practiced in the county part time.
