iwo Amiss brothers from Amissville practiced in the county right after the Civil War. Dr. William Amiss came to Sperryville and was practicing there in 1890. His brother, Dr. Thomas B. Amiss was practicing in the Slate Mills area until 1874 and then moved to Page County.

They received wide spread attention and recognition for surgery they performed together on the field after the Battle of Cedar Mountain for saving Major Snowden Andrews’ life.

Flint Hill had Dr. Edgar Browning, father of John S. Browning around 1920. Later years, there was Dr. William E. Lynn and Dr. Edwin Eastham.

Washington had Dr. E.W. Brown, while Sperryville had Dr. W.J. Smith and Woodville had Dr. J.G. Brown, grandfather of Mrs. Frances B. Thornton.

Dr. J. G. Brown practiced in this area for almost 50 years. He was the doctor who made the house call when I was bom. My mother saved the canceled check and the total cost for my delivery was $18.

Dr. J.P. Snead Jr. was bom and raised in Gid Brown Hollow and started a practice in Sperryville in 1932. This was
