When it was created in 1776, slavery was legal in every state, north and south. And slavery existed under that flag for 85 years. It was also the flag that flew over the near total genocide of the native American peoples, an episode of devastation and deceit that was unconscionable, and which was pursued with gusto by the same Union army officers, like Phillip Sheridan, who leaned the art of total war while laying waste to the civilian infrastructure of the South.
Finally, in his snottiest comments, Gardner says, “Giving him the benefit of the doubt, Ben is guilty of a common impulse...to romanticize anything remotely connected to the bloody War Between the States...Query, for example, whether he would propose that the sacrifice of their lives by millions of conscripted German foot soldiers should somehow convert the Swastika into so much symbolic tofu.”
Sorry, pal. There was nothing romantic about it. Nothing. But the effort was amazing. And that is an extremely well documented fact. And no, I do not propose that Nazis be glorified. And I don’t think that your ancestors were in any way comparable to Nazis. I’m sorry that you do.
