This is the time of year when terror can rein over your backyard and tranquility can vanish with the flash of feathers. The time of year that Sharp-shinned hawks are migrating to warmer climates, passing through our area and terrorizing our favorite backyard birds.
Its range in summer is largely restricted to evergreen woods, where it breeds and manages to keep well out of sight. In fall and winter it is frequently seen when in pursuit of small birds, like House Sparrows and starlings, not by preference, but because of their availability. Another bird commonly preyed upon is the robin, its habits usually make it an easy catch for the hawk.
Sharp-shinned hawks also make a living eating small birds like the ones coming to your birdfeeder, such as House Finches, Gold Finches and the Northern Cardinals.
