Rappahannock News Writer • Up on the Drive the other night, feeling fall in the air, the iqountaintop leaves already changing, already falling, and with the air crisp and clear as the gloaming paled over the Massanutten, I felt again, as always, the enchantment that drew me to this place as a child. Up by Stony Man I sat on a stone wall and watched as the lights of the Valley put on their quiet, faraway show. , - Being greedy, I asked God to give me many more years to sit on rock walls and look at vallpys. I turned 60 the other day and perfect moments are becoming more precious. ♦ So too, are the opportunities , tasay what I think I need to say. My recent column on Southern heritage stirred up some strong opinions, some negative, and several directed at me in a personal way. I feel the need to , respond to these critics for several reasons, the most obvious being my love of a fight. In my misspent youth, it was said that I “would fight a saber saw.”

As you can tell by my face, the saw usually came out on top. So these days I mostly scrap with words. It is safer work, but be warned. Though the scars ' don’t show, there can be lasting - wounds. I like what one Yankee general said of Stonewall: “In advance, he will outrun his wagons. In retreat, he will fight you ■ over a wheelbarrow.”
