My son, Ryan, who is a graduate of RCHS, is a Sergeant in the USMC (I don’t think you want to make fun of those initials). If our politicians in Washington manage to get us into another war, my son will be in an amphibious assault vehicle, hitting the beach much like you may have seen in the Movie Saving Private Ryan.
My father and son have been willing to defend our Constitution with their lives. In honor of them, I will speak out against efforts to destroy it through “liberal” legal interpretations.
Months ago, Mr. Jones argued that the Constitution gives people the right to bum the American flag on the grounds that burning the flag is a form of speech. Frankly, I kept my silence then because I was too angry to speak and opted for the Calvin Coolidge approach.
What Mr. Jones failed to tell his readers is that the “interpretation” that says burning the flag is speech is based on a recent decision of the Supreme Court. Our Constitution was in operation for well over 200 years before anyone ever thought that burning the flag was protected speech. Mr. Jones argued that the flag is only a symbol. Maybe so, but so is the Washington Monument. If protestors decided to blow it up, would that be protected by the First Amendment?
