Robert H. Coates, 83, of Culpeper died on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Culpeper Health Care Center.
Mr. Coates was bom Sept. 29, 1917 in Madison County, a son of the late William Edgar Coates and Lucy Mildred Covington Coates.
He was employed by Bottle Gas Corporation of Virginia and Columbia Gas Company for many years. He enjoyed fishing, farming and visiting with the sick.
Mr. Coates was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a past deacon. He was also a charter member of the Brandy Station Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of pi years, Irene Weaver Coates; a brother (son) John F. Coates of Culpeper; six brothers, Charlie Coates Sr. and Joseph Coates, both of Culpeper, Delma Coates of Reva, Hugh Coates and Paul Coates, both of Madison and William Coates of Chesapeake; two sisters, Sally Frances Thornhill of Boston and Mildred Matthews of Orange and numerous nieces and nephews.
.In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, James Coates; a sister, Virginia Brown Coates and numerous half brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Huneycutt, the Rev. Sanford L. Martin and Deacon Ray Abell officiating.
.. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery with military honors provided by Culpeper VFW Post #2524 and Culpeper American Legion Post #330.
. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper was in charge of the arrangements.
