Mr. Lewis Gardner of Sperryville tells us in a somewhat condescending manner that “the rebel flag is the enduring symbol of a tragic attempt by an agrarian ruling class to preserve for its own benefit, at enormous human cost, a failed, morally corrupt network of social and economic institutions." He further proclaims that “Poor white southerners, my ancestors among them, suffered along with African Americans, sacrificing blindly for that ignoble cause even when its success would have reinforced their own dire circumstances under an oppressive regime of free labor and racial polarization of working people.”
Now, it is one thing to take a complicated matter and make it understandable. That is a special gift of clarity. But it is quite another to take a complicated matter and pretend, as Mr. Gardner does, that it is simple.
