In the last rendition of Up in the Hollow, Ben Jones poked a little good-natured fun at the J.D., L.L.M. that followed the signature line on a piece I wrote in response to a previous article of his. That’s fair, but let me explain what those initials mean.
J.D. stands for Juris Doctor. I studied 3 years for that degree. That degree earned me the right to practice law once I passed the Bar Exam. I studied an additional two years for the L.L.M. degree, which is a Master of Laws. That degree qualifies me to teach law.
However, those initials mean a lot more to me than that. You see, my father left college after Pearl Harbor and joined the U.S. Navy. He ultimately earned his wings and served the country as a Navy Pilot during WWII. He never got to finish college and never earned a degree, although he was a lot smarter than most people who have the initials after their name.
More importantly, he was as Konest and hard working as any man I have ever known. He was determined to see that his sons got the education that he never got. He gave up a lot in life so that his three sons could get what he lost when duty called. I display those initials after my name to honor him.
