Earlier in the day the evacuated employees overfilled the city streets. As each building locked down, more cars poured out of the underground garages into the already clogged lines of traffic.
As 1 rushed by yet another building with its alarm still screaming warning to long gone inhabitants, I wondered what to do with myself. My boss had just told us to “Go home now” and everywhere I looked there were masses of people fleeing as if their salvation depended upon crossing the Potomac.
My home for now is in an apartment building within sight of the White House. I felt very alone amongst all these people who were racing to put as much distance as they could between themselves and my neighborhood.
Lines of people anxious to access their cars wound from the gates of the garages down the block and around corners. The city was buzzing with people and a sense of desperation. I felt I should be trying to get out too. But my car is parked in my driveway in Rappahannock, and my cell
