McClure, 39, is currently serving an elected term on the board of the Virginia chapter of the Horseman’s Benevolent and Protective Agency, and was instrumental in getting more jump races on this year’s card at Colonial Downs in New Kent County, Virginia’s only pari-mutuel racetrack.
Cooney, 40, is a talented professional steeplechase jockey and exercise rider who has been quietly making a name for himself on the steeplechase circuit.
“When I started riding races here nobody knew who I was,” he said. “Pat and Susan (Cooney, his brother and sister-in-law) gave me a leg up when I first got here. Still, it was a long time before anyone knew who I was.
