The so-called “Steeplethon" race is a Great Meadow original. The unique course at Great Meadow was created and built in 1995 by a team of Virginia steeplechase horsemen, headed by Great Meadow founder Nick Arundel.
The course was designed to add a new dimension to racing over fences, with varied types of obstacles fashioned after the foxhunting field from which, in turn, the sport of steeplechasing initially was horn in the 17th century.
