The Internat ional Gold Cup, hold annually on tho third Saturday in October, (or IS years has heon tho highlight of Virginia’s fail steeplechase season.
But the tradition of‘chasing for ownership of the grand golden vase wasn’t horn in the ()ld Dominion.
The first International Cold Cup was held in 1903 at Grasslands Downs in Tennessee, over a 4 1/2-mile brush course. The spectacularly beautilid gold trophy, still awarded to the winner, was placed in competition that year by the King of Spain. Alfonso XIII, then one of the world's most gallant riders and sportsmen.
Two years later, the meet moved to tile Rolling Rock course in Pennsylvania, built hy Gen Richard King Mellon, where it ran until 1983. In the half-century it was run over the natural brush hedges at Rolling Rock, the International Gold Cup became the most prestigious hurdle race of the fall season.
When the Rolling Rock meet folded in 1983, the Cup tradition and its legendary trophy moved to its current home at Great Meadow in The Plains. But one small change was in store for the prestigious event: in keeping with Virginia’s tradition of quality
