phone, a way to call for help, wouldn’t even give me a dial tone.
Once home, I discovered that landlines were down and that bridges were closing.
I calmed as soon as I was inside and couldn't hear people screaming to each other, once the walls had buffered the sounds of car horns and sirens. I changed clothes; I took a nap. In an hour or so my uncle and I pulled out our cameras and went for a walk to tour the disaster.
Police line tape blocked off streets we usually take. There was an eerie lack of tourists and businessmen, but nothing was smoking and the military police hadn’t arrived yet.
That night we ate dinner in a restaurant that marked the police line; the yellow tape was tied to its doorknob. My uncle and I were dining with a friend of his who was in DC on business. She works across the street from the WTC. She gets off her train there at 8:45 every morning. She ordered a bottle of wine. Helicopters flew by the window so close our glasses shook. President Bush had finally joined us in DC. We walked home through a quiet city, but a peaceful one.
