Racing on the flat was held in Virginia as early as 1678 in Henrico County. The first thoroughbred was imported to the colonies in 1730. This stallion, “Bulle Rock,” stood service in Hanover, spreading his blue blood over the new world and influencing thoroughbred breeding here even yet today.
But the first steeplechase, according to authoritative documentation, took place in Ireland in 1752, when a “certain Mr. Callaghan and his friend, Mr. Edmund Blake, made a sporting wager to race across country from Buttevant Church to the steeple of St. Leger Church, a distance of roughly four and one-half miles.”
Thus the sport of steeple hunting, as it was often called at first, was started, with the horses matched two at a time and tested more for jumping
