The steeplethon is a challenge to both horse and rider. Copying successful cross-country racecourses in France and England. the steeplethon course includes such difficult obstacles as a brush-topped banks, as in England, and a shallow, 170-foot wide water crossing, as at Craon in France.
The race is designed for experienced steeplechasers, over 18 fences — none of which, unusually, is jumped more than once in the three-mile race.
