Looking a gift horse in the mouth
There is no exact or quite "correct” way to compare horse years and human years. However, it can be fun to consider how a horse's age, actually and figuratively, corresponds with a person. For a rough idea of how old a horse is in human years, the following guidelines are considered valid by veterinary standards: • First horse year = seven human years (so your yearling is like a second grade student) • Second horse year = seven human years (so your 2year-old in training is like a high school freshman) • Next three horse years = four human years each (so your 4-year-old horse is like a 26-year-old young professional person) • Subsequent horse years = 2 1/2 human years each (so your 16-year-old horse is reaching official human “retirement” age of 65)
